Taking your own Photographs

A quick guide to taking a suitable reference photo of your nude partner.

  • Do not use just your camera's built in flash. It will wash out all of the shadows. Use a lamp or add daylight at one side of your subject instead to create nice shadows and interest around the body.

  • Create a nice pose. Take a look through our Posing Guide for ideas. It will add an “artistic feel” if the subjects head is turned to one side or doesn't look directly into the camera.

  • Talk to your subject. Crack some jokes maybe. This helps them relax and feel comfortable.

  • Don't get to close or start using a “wide angle” setting on your camera. This can distort your pictures.

  • Size and quality. The bigger, the more detailed the better generally. Try and avoid camera shake, dark, fogged and blurred images. Don't worry about trying to get all of the figure in as this can reduce the size of the model too much. Take as many photos as you can. Having choice later is good. Use maximum pixel resolution if using a digital camera or an ISO 50,100 or 200 film. If your picture is on film it would be best if you could supply the negative or slide.

  • Send at least a dozen over other photographs in “support” of your reference photograph if possible. Ideally taken at the same time as your reference photograph. As we are not present at your photo shoot, this will help in getting a “feel” about your subject and the environment they are in.
